BibliographyThis work presents a system for the recognition of on-line handwritten
mathematical formulas. The system consists of two main stages: Classification
of isolated on-line handwritten symbols and the analysis of spatial
relationships among them. We propose a system for the recognition of isolated
on-line handwritten characters which is based on support vector
classification. We also propose a suitable representation for strokes and
symbols which is used to improve the classification rates of the classifier.
Our experiments show that our classifier achieved better classification rates
in comparison to other popular classification techniques. This could be
accomplished by extensive preprocessing of the data and by parameter selection
for the support vector classification. We propose a new structural analysis
method for the recognition of on-line handwritten mathematical expressions
based on a minimum spanning tree construction and symbol dominance. Our method
addresses important layout problems frequently encountered in on-line
handwritten formula-recognition systems. Our method also aims to handle input
as naturally as possible, i.e. using the usual mathematical conventions,
without restrictions in the order the symbols are written. Our method handles
symbols with non-standard layout, like \sideset{^{*}_{*}}{^{*}_{*}}\prod, as
well as tabular layouts, e.g. matrices. Our system for the recognition of on-
line handwritten mathematical expressions is used in the Electronic Chalkboard
(E-Chalk), a multimedia system for distance-teaching.
Techniken bessere Erkennungsraten erreichte.

A note on calibration of video cameras for autonomous vehicles with optical flow
We show how to compute the extrinsic parameters of a video camera from the
optical flow measured in consecutive video frames. We assume that the camera
is mounted on a car or a robot which move forward and sideways on a flat area
to acquire the images used for the calibration. The vanishing points of the
optical flow lines provide enough information to compute the camera rotation
matrix. We also show how the flow lines on the ground together with the
vehicles's velocity provide enough information to compute the camera position
The self-regulated learning models offer comprehensive theoretical backgrounds. These enable more holistic approaches to the use of learning strategies. In this paper, Zimmerman‟s (2000; 2003; Zimmerman & Moylan, 2009) cyclical model of self-regulated learning is described and analysed as one of the most comprehensive. The model is grounded in social cognitive theory and is comprised of three phases (forethought, performance and self-reflection) with a special focus on the influences of motivation on self-regulation. The differ-ent processes included in the model are analysed here in detail. Zimmerman‟s framework is considered in relation to other self-regulated learning models in order to recognize its importance in theory and practiceThis research was funded via fellowship awarded to Ernesto Panadero by the Spanish Education Department (Ref. Self-assessment effects review: empirical evidence about its implementation using self-grading, rubrics and scripts
Se señalan líneas futuras de investigaciónThis review analyzes studies on the effects of self-assessment. These studies are grouped as: (1) self-grading, or interventions to promote self-assessment without assessment criteria, (2) use of rubrics, and (3) use of scripts. A literature search was
conducted followed by a narrative content analysis of the selected studies. Regarding selfassessment without assessment criteria, the results are heterogeneous, though, in general, they show that these interventions do not warrant an improvement in the students’ learning. The use of rubrics and scripts presents more promising effects, but there are still important aspects to explore: studies on rubrics tend to rely on weak research designs, while studies on scripts, in general, have not been implemented in real classrooms settings. The main conclusion is that rubrics and scripts offer better conditions for self-assessment. Future lines of research are discusse
This paper addresses time in the internationalization process, in a general way, and more specifically analyses the effects of speed and presence mode on the choice of a progressive (or not progressive) approach to the international expansion of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). These effects are examined within the framework of a sample of 214 SMEs engaged in internationalization and located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France. The results first show that a fast or slow internationalization pace will indicate different approaches to internationalization and will correspond to SMEs which value the criterion of risk minimization bound to future geographical targets differently. Furthermore, models of regression show that the presence mode chosen by SMEs has a very contrasted impact on the choice of a progressive (or not progressive) approach to internationalization, this, depending on the speed (slow or fast) of international expansion. Explanations based on the Uppsala model as well as the “Born Global” approach are proposed.
Design proposal for a theater of 1500 spectators A look from the origins of this architectural typology
Rubrics vs. self-assessment scripts effect on self-regulation, performance and self-efficacy in pre-service teachers
This is the author’s version of a work that was accepted for publication in Studies in Educational Evaluation. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. A definitive version was subsequently published in Studies in Educational Evaluation, 39, 3 (2013) DOI 10.1016/j.stueduc.2013.04.001Two approaches to self-assessment are optimal, because they include the assessment criteria: rubrics and scripts. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of rubrics and scripts on self-regulation, performance and self-efficacy. A total of 69 pre-service teachers participated in the study. During a semester the participants were trained to design multimedia material in three experimental conditions (rubrics, scripts and control). Results showed that students using the scripts had higher levels of learning
self-regulation after the intervention, whereas rubrics decreased performance/avoidance self-regulation (negative self-regulatory actions detrimental to learning). No significant effects were found for students’ performance or self-efficacy. Students preferred the use of rubrics to the use of scriptsSupport for this research was provided by grants from the Spanish Education Department to Ernesto Panadero (Ref. Experimental characterisation of dry friction isolators for shock and vibration
Abstract
Shock and vibration are a source of failures in harsh environments such as military, naval and aerospace applications; thus,
the use of vibration isolators is extended. Cable isolators are known for their high-energy storage and dissipation
properties making them suitable for shock isolation and low frequency vibration. Such isolators present nonlinear
stiffness in different directions such as compression, roll and shear, as well as dry friction damping. Although their
use is extended, the knowledge regarding their dynamic response under shock loading is very limited. This work presents
an overview of the vibration and shock isolation performance of several cable isolators under axial loading. The main
contribution of the paper is to investigate and discuss the shock response of the isolators when subjected to pulses of
different durations, finding improved isolation performance when compared to an equivalent linear system. Furthermore,
a mathematical model based on a Duffing oscillator is proposed as a first approximation, in order to reflect the nonlinear
stiffness and predict the shock response, thus facilitating further design and selection of improved shock isolation
systems.
